Cristina Cordero

Praised for “the quality of her sound” and her “musical and interpretative ability” (El Primer Palau, 2020), Spanish Cristina Cordero is establishing herself as a versatile violist, sought-after internationally as both soloist and chamber musician.

She is a top prizewinner of several international competitions, including the First Prize and Juventudes Musicales de España Award at the El Primer Palau competition, the First Prize at the International Chamber Music Competition Gerhard Vogt, the First Prize at the VI Cidade Vigo National Viola Competition, the First Prize at the I Spanish Viola National Association Competition, and the Second Prize at the II OFMAN International Musical Performance String Competition.

With a great passion for chamber music, Cristina has been a guest artist at numerous prestigious festivals, including the Verbier Festival, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Schloss Elmau Festival, Festival Emergents, Eggenfelden Klassisch and Krzyzowa-Music, among others. Additionally, she has had the honor of collaborating with world-renowned musicians such as Gary Hoffman, Viviane Hagner, Daniel Stabrawa and Nobuko Imai.

She has also performed as a soloist with orchestras, such as Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Filarmónica de Castilla La Mancha, Orquesta de Cámara Andrés Segovia, Orquesta Sinfónica de Cuenca in Ecuador, Orquesta Filarmónica del Desierto in Mexico and Orquesta Sinfónica Freixenet, and gives frequent solo appearances in some of the most important halls in her homeland such as Teatro Real, Palau de la Música Catalana, L’Auditori, Auditorio Príncipe Felipe, and Auditorio Nacional.

Her creative spirit has led her to find new ways to broaden her instrument’s repertoire and bring original ideas to modern audiences. Collaborating with her musical partner, Juan Barahona, they have created "Romeo & Juliet: a Story in Music," a new project that merges Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet ballet music with Shakespeare's timeless tale, both performed and narrated by the musicians themselves. Premiering at the Palau de la Música de Barcelona and already presented in over twenty-five venues across Spain and South America, this unconventional viola and piano recital is captivating audiences with its unique blend of music and storytelling.

Born in Madrid in 1998, Cristina started playing the viola at 5 years old, and continued her studies with Diemut Poppen at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid. She subsequently earned her Bachelor’s degree in 2020 from the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich under the tutelage of Hariolf Schlichtig. From 2020 to 2023, she pursued her Master's studies with Professor Nobuko Imai, once again at the ESMRS, where he received from the hands of Her Majesty Queen Doña Sofía the title of "Most Outstanding Student". Other influential mentors during her artistic development include professors Jonathan Brown, Wenting Kang, and Heime Müller. Her studies have been generously supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung, Fundación Albéniz, AIE Society of Artists and Juventudes Musicales de Madrid.

Cristina is a viola professor at Conservatorio Superior de Música de Aragón (Zaragoza, ES) and Escuela Superior de Música Forum Musikae (Madrid, ES).
