Cristina Cordero

Praised for her "naturalness and versatility" (Scherzo) and "firm and elegant sound" (Ritmo), violist Cristina Cordero is a sought-after multifaceted musician. She recently joined the renowned Cuarteto Casals, the Barcelona-based string quartet with nearly three decades of history that is regularly invited to perform in the world's most prestigious concert halls.

Born in Madrid (Spain), Cristina began playing the viola at the age of five. She completed her Intermediate Music Studies with Spain’s highest national award, and continued her education at the Reina Sofía School of Music with Diemut Poppen, supported by Fundación Albéniz and the Government of Madrid. She later moved to Munich to pursue her Bachelor’s degree at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München under the tutelage of Hariolf Schlichtig, thanks to scholarships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Juventudes Musicales de Madrid, and AIE Artistas. She then returned to the Reina Sofía School to complete her Master’s degree with Nobuko Imai.  During her years at the ESMRS, she was repeatedly distinguished as Most Outstanding Viola Student and Most Outstanding Chamber Music Student, honors awarded by Her Majesty Queen Sofía.

A first-prize winner at national and international competitions such as El Primer Palau 2020, Cristina has appeared as a soloist in leading venues including Teatro Real, Palau de la Música Catalana, L’Auditori de Barcelona, and the Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, performing with orchestras such as the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya (OBC), the Orquesta Sinfónica Freixenet, and the Orquesta de Cámara Andrés Segovia, among others. She is also a guest at major festivals including the Verbier Festival, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Krzyzowa-Music.

Cristina’s commitment to cultural outreach is reflected in her innovative interdisciplinary projects aimed at connecting classical music and the arts with new audiences. Among them is “Romeo y Julieta: Música e Historia,” a project that premiered at the Palau de la Música Catalana in 2021 and has since toured more than twenty-five venues across Spain and Latin America. Her recent recording with Aria Classics has received enthusiastic critical acclaim, described as “a magnificent recording debut, musically and interpretatively impeccable” (Scherzo) and “a hybrid format that breaks boundaries without sacrificing musical excellence” (Melómano).

Alongside her intense concert activity, Cristina has a strong vocation for teaching. She is a professor of viola and chamber music at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, Forum Musikae in Madrid, the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, and the Royal Conservatoire The Hague.
